“If we have the courage and tenacity of our forebears, who stood firmly like a rock against the lash of slavery, we shall find a way to do for our day what they did for theirs.”

Our Priorities

Florida Freedmen Advocacy Center is committed to the preservation and development of Black American heritage communities in Florida.

  • We advocate for the preservation of historical resources (including artifacts, burial grounds, landmarks, narratives, etc.) relevant to ethnic Black American heritage communities in Florida and assist individuals in recovering family history through genealogical research.

  • We encourage civic participation among Black Americans and educate community members and organizations on the unique impacts of various government policies and initiatives on Black American descendants of persons formerly enslaved and emancipated federally in 1865 via the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (American Freedmen).

  • We support the generation of ethnic Black American/American Freedmen owned businesses by providing marketing and promotional opportunities, and connecting entrepreneurs with information and resources needed to create and sustain an enterprise.
